Jack's Guides - make IT easy
About Us - Jack's Guides Revealed
We take our name from the familiar proverb "Jack of all trades, master of none". What many people do not know is that there is a third part to this proverb - "but oft times better than master of one".
In today's fast changing world of IT and Business you have to be flexible and be knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects. You don't necessarily need great depth of knowledge in any one subject - there are always experts to be found. But, especially if you are a Manager, a Project Manager or a Business Analyst, you need to understand the basics of a wide range of technologies, processes and ideas.
Even if you are an expert in one particular field, you need to know the basics of other technologies and ideas. Given the speed at which IT moves, sometimes today's experts become tomorrow's unemployed. You have to stay ahead of the pack to survive.
Who are we?
Jack's Guides are written by a community of writers. Between us we have several hundred years of experience in the IT world. We are all seasoned professionals, with deep experience and enthusiasm for what we do. Most of us have been in IT from 10 to 30 years.
Although each book in the series is authored by a named individual, the collective experience of this community of authors serves as a common sense check on what has been written.
What are we trying to do?
We won't talk of "Mission Statements" and "Values" as we mostly prefer to keep away from those forms of corporate language, but we do have a shared passion - to demystify the often arcane world of IT and to communicate our passion and knowledge to other IT professionals, and those people in business who have to deal with us.The world of IT is fast moving. The technologies change at a blistering pace, and somehow we all have to keep up. To add to the problem there is also a "fashion" industry in the IT world. New solutions and techniques come along as fast as the new technology. Some are good; some are frankly only fashion and are dropped almost as soon as the "next big thing" comes along.
If you are an IT Professional you have to keep up with what's happening. This can be quite difficult. Employers are often reluctant to send you on courses, which aren't directly relevant to what you are currently doing. If you are a Consultant or Contractor the problem is even worse - IT courses are generally expensive and you lose valuable earning time as well.
Of course there are thousands of books published every year on all manner of IT subjects. Frequently they are thick and heavy, and go into far too much detail. I personally have bookshelves full of these "bricks", when often all I really needed was the first few chapters, or a very summarised form of the book.
So all these books consume a lot of money and take up valuable space in my house. There has to be a better way.
Don't Panic
We think Jack's Guides e-books are a solution. We would have liked to have the words "Don't Panic" on the cover, but that honour belongs to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
Our e-books are easy to read and contain only the essentials of any particular topic. Frequently you need to know only the essentials - if you want to study a particular topic in depth there are many fine books available. Some are referenced in our Guides, where the authors find them useful or entertaining.
If you are an IT professional or you have to deal with IT people, or even if you need some information for a meeting or an interview, Jack's Guides will give you the basics without the weight and cost. Despite what other people may tell you, what IT and Business want today are flexible people with a broad range of skills - the Generalist.
It's worth looking up "jack of all trades" in Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) for a fascinating discussion of the origins of the proverb and the concept of the "Polymath". After all, some of history's most famous names were generalists, not specialists.
