The joys of being in Business today.

You know what it's like - you have solid skills in one particular area, which have taken you lots of time and effort to acquire and hone, but you are expected to know something about everything else as well.

In today's business world, IT is king. Very few significant business processes today can happen without IT being involved in some form or other. More and more you find you need to talk to IT people, even interview or employ them. How do you know what they are talking about, or even how do you know whether they know what they are talking about?

How do you keep up?

We all know that we only remember the detail of whatever we are We all know that we only remember the detail of whatever we are working with currently and constantly.

Try remembering what the IT guys told you when they were selling you on the new system last year.

Try to remember the detail of some topic you passed an exam in two years ago.

Try to use the latest version of a tool which has been upgraded (improved??) twice since you last worked with it.

THEN - you want to apply for a promotion, or a new job, or a new contract.

You read the job spec and your heart sinks as you read the list of all these topics you are supposed to know something about.
You know that if you admit you don't know much about any of them you won't get to first base.you only vaguely understand - and you're out at second base. You need to be able to "talk the talk".

You can buy some books and read up on the topics you are not sure of. Can't you?

Well, like many people I have bookshelves groaning under the weight of these bricks I have bought, often 300-500 page monsters that are good for wedging doors open, but not much use if you want to get quickly to the essentials. They are not cheap either - and there are not many things in this life that depreciate faster than a used IT book.

Do some courses then!

Sounds great doesn't it. How much do you pay for a one or two day course on most IT topics? Then you have to take a couple of days of your holidays to do it. If you're a freelance you lose a couple of days pay on top of the cost of the course. It had damn well better be worth it - and how often is it?

So what's the answer?

What you need is some material that
  • Gives you the power knowledge that has the biggest pay back
  • Tells you the essentials of what you need to know, without pages of confusing and irrelevant detail
  • Can be read or re-read quickly
  • Tells it like it is, without drowning you in unreadable academic jargon
  • Is in a compact readable format that can either be printed or downloaded into your phone, PDA, laptop etc, so you can read it on the way to work, or whenever you have a bit of spare time
  • And you don't need to buy another book shelf!
